Getting there…November 2024

Wohoo!!! Here we go again!

1017 days. That’s the last time I sat at Heathrow Terminal 5, when I sacked my employers, jumped in the car and bolted to South America on a wing and a prayer. The drama filled days that preceded that trip are happily behind me. What a holiday, cos let’s face it, that’s what it was! I came home 131 days later, still having no clue what I’d do next. I always promised myself that having chosen to be a young mum, I’d do what most people do when the fledglings had flown. So that’s what I did!

As my next career plan hadn’t yet solidified, I started a job in the autumn of 2022 was as pants as the previous, only a different colour, style and fabric, but pants nonetheless. I had another soul-destroying 3-month notice period inflicted on me, and on finishing, had the long-anticipated bi-compartmental knee replacement to rebalance the metal in me, became a freelance consultant, resumed my sports and remedial therapy business and tried to adapt to a new world where cycling no longer featured.

I still have the same number of teeth but I have replaced the metal in that tooth with 4 different kinds of implants in my knee. My jaw has collapsed and I am very much looking forward to a Hannibal Lecter mouthguard when I get home. I have a fracture in my left metacarpal sustained after a freak bullseye hit from an industrial sized luggage strap buckle on it before an event. And luckily, what felt like a popped rib, sustained after my regular daily session of Greco-Roman Wrestling has calmed down. As caring about the weight of my bike and bags is no longer a topic of discussion (I am no longer fast and light, rather slow and heavy) I’ve bought with me hoarded drugs of all kinds and around 200 needles to get stuck into should the urge take me. Otherwise, not much has changed!

The body is an amazing pile of cells. It’s 8 months since I last cried about my knee, whilst it seems it will always hurt and never be good, it probably won’t get any better and hopefully won’t get any worse. On balance, there’s plenty of awful things that happen to people and in terms of knees, I’m just the first in a long line of my network who are likely to be getting similar at some point. The knee now marks my 12th operation since 2006! Still just about standing 😄

Which leads me to here. I’m sat in São Paulo, watching the world go by at Aeroporto Internacional de Guarulhos on a dull and wet day, only different from home because it’s warmer and people are not speaking English. Later today, I’ll lie in my apartment and listen to the tropical birds as they serenade each other. This is, after all, right on the edge of the Amazon (i like to think so anyway!). I’ll make a friend of my taxi driver again, this time, Rodriguez, and this time I’ll attempt pigeon Portuguese. He’ll tell me how the roads are flooded and the F1 Grand Prix was delayed. Keane will play on the radio and I’ll tell him I sat next to their producer and that the whole band and entourage were on my flight. Ace!

I stink, as I’ve been dragging round my adventure steed for nearly 24 hours. Martini’s a titanium adventure bike and much to my disgust, has a pannier rack and panniers (Olive and Espresso) tucked away in the mountain bike cardboard box which adorns her, covered in “FRAGILE” tape and weighing in at 22.5kg fully loaded. I upsized her tyres from 32 to 35, then 38 and finally 42c. They now weigh a massive 518 grams each! My additional travel companions are here too: there’s my old faithfuls, my Antler Star Wars Suitcase (think storm trooper) and Monkey 2, my old backpack which has come with me to Greece, across the Americas and around Wales. They’ll both shortly meet their maker as the bike box is cut into little pieces, at the point when I finally will have figured out where I’m going to begin this adventure. It’s fair to say that this trip, I am completely self-sufficient to the point I can even start a fire using steel and flint. That could be fun! The most exciting edition to this trip is the camera and two lenses. They are the heaviest items I’m carrying so I’ll have to do them some justice.

I decided on the plane that my personal transformation is complete. I’ve convinced myself I look like a bad ass ninja explorer, in black zip off trousers, black merino t-shirt and merino hoodie and to finish off the look, black merino socks. Nobody is going to mess with me. That is more attributable to being older so even less of a target for the supposed opportunistic bandits hanging out on every corner of Patagonia. There was definitely a time I dressed up to travel but alas, those times are gone. Whilst I have more clothing with me than last trip, that’s only by one t-shirt, an extra pair of knickers and a bikini. But 47 days of the same clothes! It’s not really befitting of a lady from Windsor who went to a convent (spell check just corrected that to concentration camp 😂).

I’m only in São Paulo because I first thought I’d ride Brazll. Chile kept calling me, haunting me as I’d not been able to get in during 2022 due to their IT systems and COVID. The impact of this indecision is I sit, waiting 6 hours now to get into an apartment where I’ll hang out until early tomorrow, when I’ll either jump on a plane, either to Santiago or Puerto Montt.

The hesitation around those plans is that the weather from Puerto Montt south until further notice looks like the end of the world (I guess it would because it is!). I’m not thrilled about the extreme likelihood of being completely wet through for 2 weeks, camping and riding through deep mud on unpaved roads the length of the UK. It seems torturous that just a hop, skip and jump across the Andes back into my old friend Argentina, the Patagonian desert is bone dry, windy yes, but also 25 degrees! It’s fair to say that as I sit here pontificating, it could go one of 4 ways. I’ve not lost my ability to wing it even if I’ve lost my fitness. Yes, everything will be okay!

My next biggest worry is which virus is likely to get me. I don’t know what it is about airports but I seem to attract travellers who sit down next to me and leak snot from every orifice. Do they sit down and quietly dispose of it into a tissue? No. They chug it down, project it in all directions and snort as if no one’s listening. I feel for them, I really do. Just go somewhere else. Perhaps that they want to let everyone know how unwell they are. Or to make others suffer “I’m about to have a shitty time on my trip, so come join me in my misery”. It happened at Heathrow and now again here. I wouldn’t mind but they seem to come find me. Why? And as if on queue, my ears detect I’m sat in infested corner…time to move…

For today and to this end, much like the last trip, I’ll get to my apartment, listen to the sounds of the city, the rain gently falling as tyres cut through puddles on the noisy street below. Sirens will erupt and accentuate the rhythm of the city. I’ll pick up my Spanish lessons and as I fall to sleep, mull over what the heck I’m going to do tomorrow.

In the morning, I’ll surreptitiously manoeuvre between duty free make up counters, slather up on moisturiser and perfume, and lament the time that will pass until I see them again. Victoria’s Secret will look down on me in disgust as I pass wearing one of the two pairs of knickers that will be my closest friends tor 7 weeks. I’ll know that I will definitely make it to Santiago but Puerto Montt? Who bloody knows? 😄

Japan has always been somewhere I wanted to visit but due to either a lack of money or feeling like I didn’t know enough of the language or both, I didn’t think I was ready to go and kept putting it off as something to do in the future.

Having now been I can safely say that both of those worries were justified, it was an expensive trip and I definitely didn’t know enough Japanese but it was definitely worth going to confirm this so that I can be better prepared for my next trip.

That’s right, some people want to try new things and go to new places but I just want to go back to Japan and do new things and go to new places there. Our 2 week trip crammed in a lot but I feel that there’s much more to see.

We started our trip around 1:00 AM, with a taxi ride to the bus station, which was closed at the time so instead it was a bus stop outside of a pizza delivery shop. In an effort to make this trip more affordable, we didn’t want to stay the night in London so elected to take an overnight coach to Heathrow, we met some lovely people at the bus stop who were trying to get to Plymouth but we had a much better destination in mind.

The coach was late and they wouldn’t let me take one of my bags on the coach, so I didn’t have much entertainment other than my phone. I had sort of planned to just stay awake for the whole thing, going as far as staying up late the previous night and getting up later in the morning in an attempt to prepare for or circumvent the jet lag.

This proved to be fruitless as I hadn’t really worked out the time differences properly so I decided to sleep on the coach, it was not the most pleasant journey so not much sleep was had. I think I got to sleep around Taunton so from there it seemed to go relatively quickly. There was an incident with the side mirror of the bus but I was asleep at that point so I only heard the aftermath not very exciting but at last we made it to the airport at 5:35 AM.

We definitely didn’t go to the wrong terminal first and fight with the boarding machines which didn’t acknowledge us, we definitely didn’t cry for help to the lovely staff there who may or may not have treated us like loverly people who had been wronged by the system before we came to the realisation that we were indeed in the wrong place. But at least we had scouted out the terminal for when we arrived back in the UK and our flight wasn’t until 9:50 AM so we had plenty of time to get to the right place.

After a spot of duty free shopping, tasty coffee and downloading some last minute podcasts to listen to on the flight, it was time to depart. I always find that I have trouble with the pressure on my ears during the flight but after my trip to New York last year, I found it much more bearable on the larger aircraft, but I was still ready with earplugs, noise cancelling headphones and chewing gum.

I managed to sleep a little, I had picked up a Trtl travel pillow which gave a bit more support than traditional travel pillows, again after my trip to New York I learnt that not having any head support sucked and I didn’t want to start off my trip super sleepy, with New York I found it easy going over there as it was only 5 hours behind you just stay up late the first night then you’re all set but coming back to the UK was much worse.

This time we are skipping 9 hours into the future (with jet packs) and arriving early in the morning so sleeping was a must to get the trip off to a good start. Although this was hampered by the strange need of the cabin crew to feed you every 3 hours, let’s turn on all the lights to wake you up so you can eat this muffin, thanks for that but I’d much rather try and get a bit more sleep.

The food on the plane was a bad sign of things to come, we believed we had pre-ordered a vegan meal but expressing this to the cabin staff resulted in a strange double salad meal, I had already decided that I would take a break from my diet whilst in Japan and this confirmed what I had heard about that veganism isn’t really a thing in Japan yet.

A(nother) Date That Will Live In Infamy?

Saturday 1st March 2025 – En-route Home!

The second leg from Los Angeles to Paris turned out closer to 11 hours and very different from the first leg. For a start, while it was the same Air France plane, it was a new cabin crew; and unlike the delightfulTahitian-French team on the first leg, this lot were mostly male and clearly from France!

On the world’s stage meanwhile, President Trump and Secretary Vance had just made the biggest diplomatic balls-up in US political history, insulting Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy and virtually picking a fight in a live TV press briefing from the Oval Office. But President Zelenskyy would not be intimidated, standing his ground and winning praise from around the world in what was nothing short of a political car-crash!

Meanwhile, and back on the re-fuelled plane, Andrew now had a new seat assignment at 11E and everything seemed fine, except his privacy door didn’t close! He wasn’t thrilled with the food either because he was still served the set lobster and citrus starter, even after he had made it plain he didn’t want it! Actually, it was quite nice……

However, gone was the helpful and personable Polynesian touch of the first leg; now we were back in the ‘real’ world – at least, the French one! It was all a bit strange to be honest; taking off around 9pm local time, dinner was served an hour or so later and at the leisurely pace of Air France – but without much of the finesse of the first leg.

Meanwhile, not wanting to watch anything ‘heavy’ in the way of entertainment from the fairly extensive film catalogue, I selected the Amazon flick ‘Red White & Royal Blue’ through dinner and then settled down to sleep for about 4 hours, waking to watch another (short) movie, ‘Enchanted’, during which the plane ‘woke up’ and breakfast was served. None of the ‘Dine how and when you want’ of Qatar Airways from 3 weeks ago, you might note!

Anyway, flying so far eastwards, and having taken off at 9pm Friday evening in LA, it was now 4.45 on Saturday afternoon when we landed at Paris, Charles de Gaulle Airport, where we had to find our gate and lounge to wait 4 hours for our 1-hour final flight to London – this time, on a different plane!

Any of you who have experienced Charles de Gaulle Airport will know it is simply vast; it looks like something out of a dystopian sci-fi film and is notoriously confusing.

Perhaps more notoriously, part of the new Terminal 2E (our terminal!) collapsed spectacularly in 2004, just months after its opening, killing 4 people and injuring 3 others!

Fortunately for us though, our transfer wasn’t too complex; but to get from our L-gate to the next K-gate we still had to take a shuttle bus mini-tour of the airport’s entrails!

Once in the K-hall of Terminal 2E, we found the Air France lounge located in an out-of-the-way basement area that felt a bit like a huge 1960s hospital waiting room, even down to the cleaning lady with a smelly mop – though admittedly there was free booze, the showers were a relief and at least the internet worked, so perhaps I’m being picky. We were just very tired….

Unfortunately, our scheduled 4-hour layover became a tedious 5 hour wait for an Airbus A220 city-hopper that had “experienced technical issues” on its previous flight from Madrid. I daren’t think what the ‘technical issues’ were, we just wanted to get home to bed! The cabin crew on this one were nice enough, I guess, but with only about 40 minutes in the air, the complimentary cold snack in the somewhat spartan Business class had to be delivered pretty sharpish! And it was more fish for Andrew – salmon this time! The cream puff thing that came with the snack was surprisingly nice and light though.

We finally landed at an almost deserted Heathrow Terminal 4 at 9.50 in the evening and were through immigration and waiting for our taxi pick-up from Gary in a record 20 minutes – knackered but complete with all our luggage!

In just over 3 months time, we’ll be tackling ‘trains and boats and planes’ when we head for Alaska and the ‘Rocky Mountaineer’!
